WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

“Hypnosis is ceasing to use your conscious awareness; in hypnosis, you begin to use your unconscious awareness.  Because unconsciously, you know much more than you do consciously.”

Milton H Erickson

Hypnosis, or being in “trance” is a common occurrence.  Have you ever got into your car, driven somewhere, and when you’ve arrived had no recollection of how you got there?  That is a state of trance.  Day dreaming during a boring lecture is another state of trance.  Being glued to the television set and being unaware of what is going on around you is yet another one.  Most people are in and out of trance all day!

So hypnosis, or trance, is a natural state of relaxation within the body and a state of heightened awareness within the mind, and the skill of the hypnotherapist is to guide the client into a therapeutic trance.  During this state, changes can easily be made to induce healing, increase self-awareness and access many more positive assertions.  It allows you to accept certain thoughts that will be both positive and beneficial to you, which will in turn, help to change your attitude.  Under hypnosis, you are more likely to accept these positive suggestions because it is your unconscious mind that is listening.

Many people have seen stage hypnotists and may be concerned that the hypnotherapist will have them “clucking like a chicken” or “eating a raw onion” or worse.  Please be assured that hypnosis is not “magic” or “mind control” and it’s not about someone’s will bending to another’s.  Under hypnosis you can expect to hear everything that is said.  You will feel relaxed but not asleep and you will be completely in control.  (If you wish to discuss any reservations you may have please contact me).

Clinical Hypnotherapy is completely natural and safe with no harmful side effects.  It is a comfortable, respectful and therapeutic way of helping people with a wide range of personal issues.
